Scéalta nag Corn – Ag tosú Mean Fomhair 14
A new series on TG4 commences on September the 14th and tells the story of a wide selection of GAA trophies of all shapes and sizes for all age ranges from u-10 tournaments to All Ireland Senior Championship. It explores the stories behind these trophies and heroes they are dedicated to. It will be presented by Gráinne McElwaine – seen in the cover photograph with Radio na Gaeltachta’s Damien Ó’Donaill and the Rann na Feirste trophy.
Gráinne will travel across Ireland visiting clubs and county grounds, learning the lesser-known stories behind our nation’s trophies. She will find out how some cups are named after Irish revolutionary patriots such as Roger Casement and Terence McSwiney, how other trophies are named after clergy, others again after prominent GAA administrators, who have contributed to the development of the Association and how even more are named after players and grassroots members, their memory perpetuated through the trophies and cups named in their honour.
The series starts in Dublin with the oldest known GAA trophy – the Silvermines Cup. Her native Monaghan is the venue for episode 2 and Antrim for the third installment. Weeks 5 and 6 see Grainne in Galway and Cork respectively and before that she visits Donegal for the fourth episode of Scéalta na gCorn.
Donegal is better known today as a football stronghold, but Gráinne discovers the northwest has historical links to both hurling and camogie. She finds out about a much-loved priest who has three cups named in his honour and before visiting county home grounds Páirc Sheáin Mhic Cumhaill, to learn about The Democrat Cup and the importance local newspapers played in Donegal’s sporting tradition.
Scealta nag Corn will run on Wednesdays for 6 weeks on TG4, with the first episode at 8:30 on September 14th.
