Last night’s County Convention was hosted and organized by Aodh Rua Cúil na gCuirridín who are celebrating their centenary year. Thank you to the Club and to Jackson’s Hotel for the effective and efficient running of the event.

There were just a few changes at the top table with Declan Martin replacing Aideen Gillen, who stepped down as Secretary leaving a vacancy, still unfilled, for Assistant Secretary. Gary Duffy also stepped down as Children’s Officer as did Ed Byrne as one of two Ulster Council Representatives. All three of these Officers will be sorely missed in the coming year and their years of service were widely appreciated and complimented by the floor. Seamus O’Donaill, who had been Central Council Representative, replaces Ed on the Ulster Council. The only new addition to the top table, as it stands at the moment, is former chairperson Sean Dunnion who was warmly welcomed back as the new Central Council Representative. Brendan Kelly and Frankie Doherty were elected as delegates to Ulster and Central Conventions, respectively.

On the financial front it was a good year with the accounts – prepared by Bonner, Gill and Co – showing a surplus of just over €300K after largely breaking even in 2018. Expenditure was much the same as last year (down €18K) at €1.39 mn, with a few variations in composition, while income was up by €285K to reach €1.70 mn. The key drivers of this increase were fundraising, sponsorship and gate receipts (in that order).

In his address to the convention the Chairperson, Mick McGrath, paid tribute to the work of Alan Boyd, the Treasurer and acknowledged “the positive support he received from Eilis Rushe our bookkeeper, our County Administrator Noreen Doherty, Paddy Tinney Assistant Treasurer, and our auditor Enda Bonner”. He also sought support for the WinYourHouseIn Dublin draw – “the largest fundraiser ever undertaken in our County” – and Brian Dolan of Club Donegal also addressed the Convention regarding this important fundraiser, aimed at financing the Centre of Excellence at Convoy. The chairperson also applauded the contributions of the different club officers over the year and was particularly appreciative of Aideen and Gary who vacated the positions of Secretary and Children’s Officer respectively.

At a later stage in the proceedings the Chairperson also thanked Kevin Mills for his sterling work as Chairperson of the Health and Wellbeing Committee and hoped that he might re-consider his decision to step down. A number of delegates from the floor also thanked Kevin for his excellent and very sensitive handling of what is not an easy role.

The full Convention Booklet can be found on www.DonegalGAA.ie This document does not include the Chairperson’s address nor the Treasurer’s Report but in the interests of transparency these will be added in the coming days.
