On behalf of the Donegal County Health & Wellbeing committee and the County board we are honoured to welcome as part of our GAA social inclusion, positive aging initiative representatives from clubs who have given of their unconditional time, commitment and dedication to their club and local community. The mission of the GAA Social Initiative/Positive aging event is to create awareness and recognise the contribution made by long standing members of the association to the GAA

The Donegal GAA Health and Wellbeing Committee in conjunction with the National Health & Wellbeing committee and Donegal County Council Social Inclusion department are hosting this event to coincide with today’s national league game featuring Donegal and current all-Ireland champions Dublin.
We extend warm welcome to all our members, supporters, invited guests and are delighted to have representatives from Donegal Age Action Council present.
The Donegal Health & Wellbeing committee was established in 2014 to:
• Assist the county board and the clubs in identifying and responding to the Health and wellbeing needs of our members in a planned and appropriate manner, both directly through appropriate GAA programmes and by way of signposting to the partnering with relevant local services providers for training/education delivery.
• Liaise with Provincial Council and Croke Park for support, direction and assistance.
• Establish a baseline audit of programmes and training/education needs in the county and put in place an action plan addressing these needs over a 2/3 year period
• Liaise with relevant outside agencies and engage their assistance in delivering the action plan.
• Make available resources to clubs to promote health, as provided by Ulster Council, Croke Park and other external Statutory, Voluntary, or Community agencies.
• Provide support, advice and signposting to clubs on health related matters.

Our Action plan 2017 will include
➢ Facilitating training for club Health & Wellbeing officers
➢ Implementing the GAA “Responding to a Critical Incident Plan”
➢ Supporting the GAA healthy club initiative
➢ Delivering Safe Talk workshops
➢ Supporting the Road Safety campaign
➢ Continuing our commitment to the Dermot Earley Youth Leadership Initiative

While it is often difficult to measure and put a value on the role of the GAA in health and wellbeing, it’s you the members and non-members through your commitment and volunteerism at every level of the organisation that provides a strong foundation of participation, friendship, family connectedness and practical support to your local community.
