***Championship***

D’Imir Cloich Cheannfhaola in éadan Naomh Mícheál sa dá chluiche Craoibhe ag an Droichead De Domhnaigh seo chaite. Chuir Cloich Cheannfhaola tús maith leis an lá nuair a bhain an fhoireann tacaíochta 2-06 | 0-09. Bhí droch-thús ag na sinsir in éadan fhoireann láidir Naomh Mícheál lena n-imeoirí contae nuair a fuair an fhoireann baile dhá chúl ghasta roimh leath-ama. Bhí Naomh Mícheal ró-láidir agus bhain said 2-11 | 0-07. Cluichí sraithe atá ann an deireadh seachtaine seo – in éadan an Tearmainn i bPáirc Naomh Fionán tráthnóna Dé Sathairn ar 6:00 agus 7:30 pm.

Cloughaneely travelled to the bridge on Sunday afternoon to face the tough challenge of St. Michaels. It was always going to be a tough ask, with St. Michaels being well established at senior level for a number of years.

Reserves: The reserves got proceedings off to a winning start by defeating St Michaels 2-06 | 0-09! Cloughaneely got off to a flying start and had a score of 1-02 registered very early on. The margin between the teams was widened even more thanks to a penalty scored by Shaun McGarvey just before the half time whistle. Cloughaneely took full advantage of playing with the strong breeze in the first half and notched themselves up a comfortable 9 point lead going in at half time. Half Time Score: CCF 2-05, St. Michaels 0-02. Despite only scoring 1 point in the 2nd half, Cloughaneely had done enough in the 1st half and managed to keep St. Michaels at bay to secure a 3 point win!

Seniors: It was a tougher challenge for our seniors; this being their first year back at Senior Championship level and also having a number of county players to contend with. St. Michaels’ Colm McFadden introduced himself to our net minder ,Shaun McClafferty, in the opening minutes of the first half with a solid shot on goal which was superbly saved by McClafferty! Breezy conditions is always an issue when playing at the bridge and Cloughaneely had the disadvantage in the 1st half; as was evident in their first half tally of 2 points – both of which came from frees converted by Denis Boyle. St. Michaels scored 2 goals in quick succession just before half time which our boys struggled to recover from. Half Time Score CCF 0-02 | 2-07.
At the beginning of the 2nd half Shaun McClafferty had another one on one encounter with Colm McFadden which McClafferty, yet again, confidently blocked from goal. The gesture was returned at the other end of the pitch when a Shaun McGuire shot on goal was cleared away to safety by St. Michaels’ Mark Anthony McGinley. Cloughaneely tried in vain to recoup their losses from the 1st half, with 2 more frees from Denis Boyle and points from Declan McGarvey, Darren McGeever and Shaun Mcguire. However, St. Michaels maintained in control throughout and never looked in any danger. The score-line would have been drastically different, were it not for Shaun McClafferty’s 2 outstanding saves in the opening minutes of each half. Final score 2-11 to 0-07. No doubt, Cloughaneely will have plenty to talk about after this game; an experience they can learn from and build on for their next championship outing!
Cloughaneely: Shaun McClafferty, Shaun McGuire (0-01), Kevin Mulhern, Martin Ferry, Paddy Cannon, Kevin McFadden, Eugene McGuire, Eamonn Curran, Ciaran Scanlon, Darren McGeever (0-01), Denis Boyle (0-04, 4F), Lee O’Brien, Darren Ferry, John Fitzgerald , John McGarvey .
Subs: HT – Darren Ferry replaced by Declan McGarvey (0-01). 45 mins – Eamonn Curran replaced by Ciaran McGeady. 48 mins – Eugene McGuire replaced by Cian McFadden.
