Buncrana GAA Notes for Week Ending Sunday 20th July 2014

Senior Football
There was no Senior club football this week as all eyes were focussed on Clones where our wee club did its bit in achieving history. Donegal won the Ulster Senior and Minor finals, the double, for the first time in its history. Donegal also won 3 out of the last 4 Ulster senior titles, another bit of county history! We had Darrach O’Connor playing in the Senior team and John Campbell and Caolan McGonigle in the Minors. Caolan and John both played vital roles in the Minors success, both getting on the score sheet with John scoring a great goal.

Minor Hurling
Buncrana minor hurlers comfortably overcame a determined St Eunan’s side to reach the county final on Sunday last. The game was played in ideal conditions and from the throw in the Scarvey boys were on top with some well taken scores, running out winners on a scoreline of 1-22 to 1-7. Next up is the county final where this young side will be going for their 2nd minor championship title in 3 years against a strong Ballyshannon side. The date is the 5th of August with the venue still to be confirmed. The side is captained by Jack O’Loughlin who is the only player who will not be underage next year. All support at the final would be greatly appreciated by the boys..

Senior Training
Seniors & Minors Hurling training is on Wednesdays at 7.00pm. All players are urged to make every effort to attend.

Seniors, Reserves, U-18, & U21 Football training is on Tuesdays & Thursdays at 7.30 in the Scarvey. New players always welcome!

Senior Ladies
The Ladies played a challenge game against a strong, well-disciplined and highly skilled Steelstown on Friday night. At halftime the score was 4-05 to 0-02 in favour of the visitors and it looked like Buncrana were in for a massacre in the second half. However, whatever was in the halftime water or team talk had a transforming effect because the Ladies upped their game and outscored a shellshocked Steelstown who managed to hold to win by 3 points. A few minutes longer and Buncrana could have capped a remarkable comeback with a win. This game was a stern test for the Ladies against quality opponents and they will have learned a lot from it.

Training every Wednesday at 7.30 in the Scarvey. New members always welcome.

Club Jerseys
Elizabeth Anne is now taking orders for the new Buncrana club jersey. Keep in mind lads that they are player fit/tight fit. If you want to order one let her know the size and number on back you require, price €50. EA also has club shorts and white shorts are in stock.

Underage Reports
Our U12’s just ran out of steam in their Northern Board Final against All-Ireland Shield winners Termon. The boys were only trailing by 1 point at half time and indeed a lead wouldn’t have flattered them. Termon management now knew they were in a game. However, the second half started with Termon scoring 6 unanswered points. Buncrana players got a few heavy knocks from genuine challenges and lost their rhythm and shape and despite a few late scores, including a goal, they couldn’t catch a fantastic and well coached Termon side. The Termon management were sincere in their praise for the quality from both teams and said after the final that this was their hardest match of the year. Well done to William Friel and Damien Doherty and to all the players for their efforts this year.

U16 and U12 hurlers had comfortable wins in their league campaigns during the week against St Eunan’s and Ballyshannon respectively.

U13 football begins this week with training Monday 7-8 and Saturday 4-5.30. First game is next Wednesday 30th at home to Fanad Gaels.

This Sunday 27th it’s the All County U8 and U10 hurling blitz in the Donegal Centre of Excellence, Convoy. This event is for all those boys and girls who have been training hard over the last couple of Sunday mornings. Could all players and parents please report to the Scarvey for 9.45am as the bus will leave promptly. Bring gear if you have it but if not then gear will be provided. €3 is needed by all players for the bus. Possibly bring a packed lunch but we can confirm this later in the week.

All County General Knowledge Quiz
Thanks to the hardy souls who turned up for the table quiz on Friday night to raise funds for the County teams. It was a hotly contested affair with much scratching of chins and perplexed looks. In saying that it was conducted in a fair and friendly manner and there weren’t too many rows! Seriously though, it was a good night’s fun and set us up nicely for Sunday in Clones. The winning team, ‘The Chosen Few’, will go on to represent the club in the All County final later. And thanks to Deirdre for the cupcakes!
