A purple patch in the first half when Donegal hit five points in succession, to move into a 0-7 to 0-2 lead, proved decisive as Donegal overcame Wicklow in their Roinn 2 Allianz Hurling League semi-final in Echelon Park, Aughrim. Victory was all the sweeter following Wicklow’s 2-24 to 0-11 victory in their Round 4 league encounter in Letterkenny just two weeks ago.
At half-time, Donegal still held a 5 point lead – 0-0 to 0-10 – but the home side were quick out of the blocks in the second half and had narrowed the gap to two points before Donegal troubled the umpires, reacting well to establish a five point margin again at 0-14 to 0-9. Wicklow piled on the pressure in the closing stages but Donegal held out for a 0-17 to 0-16 win and will meet Meath in the final next weekend.
