Donegal’s dreams of an Eirgrid u20 Ulster Championship final ended last night in Brewster Park as they lost out to a storming third quarter display from Monaghan that seen them overturn a 1-1 to 0-9 half time deficit to lead by 2-6 to 0-10 at the second half waterbreak. Some fine long-range scores in the first half lit up a dominant Donegal display but in the second half less difficult shots always seemed to creep just outside the posts. A late goal by Ryan McFadden gave Donegal some hope of forcing extra time but Monaghan full forward Donnach Swinburne completed an impressive hat-trick with the last kick of the game to gave Monaghan a 3-10 to 1-11 win and set-up final with Down at the Athletic Grounds next Friday.
Monaghan’s joy, however, is overshadowed by the death of their captain Brendan Óg Duffy who was tragically killed in a car accident on his way home from the Monaghan Training centre later that night. This tragedy puts the outcome of the match in perspective and the sympathies of all at CLG Dhún na nGall are with his family, friends and all Monaghan Gaels.
