Aodh Ruadh 1994 team to be honoured on Sunday in 100th Year of Donegal Senior Championship
The jubilee team being honoured before this year’s Michael Murphy Sports and Leisure Senior Championship final in Páirc Sheain Mhic Cumhaill is Aodh Ruadh. Back in 1994 an exciting final characterised by a brilliant fightback by Naomh Columba followed by an Aodh Ruadh recovery saw the Ballyshannon men crowned champions. Peter Campbell of the Donegal Democrat described it as “the best second-half of football in living memory”.
This year’s final is also noteworthy as being 100 years since the birth of the Donegal championship. The first final – between St Patrick’s Bundoran and Killygordon – though scheduled for December 1919 was not actually played until January 4, 1920 – seasonally inclement weather and the distractions of the War of Independence both being factors.
