Comhghairdeas le An Doire faoi-16s who overcame the challenge of CLG Dhún na nGall to win the Buncrana cup in Scarvey this afternoon. Derry led from the outset, dominating the early exchanges but excellent defensive play by Donegal kept the score to just 0-1 in the first twenty minutes. A flurry of scores approaching half-time left it 0-5 to 0-2 at the break. Donegal needed a good start to the second period but it was Derry who got it, scoring an early goal to take command. Donegal finished the game strongly to reign back in the Oak County’s lead but never got the goal they needed to rescue their challenge – the game ended 1-7 to 0-7.
While Luke Barrett’s squad just came up short in this final game of their season they have plenty of reason to hold their heads high with an 80% win record over the course of their campaign. These young players have a lot of years of football ahead of them and will learned a lot from this campaign, and today’s setback, as will their young management team. There will be better days ahead.
