Football
The very best of luck to the Donegal minors this Sunday as they take on Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final in Croke Park at 1.30pm. Good luck especially to our playing representatives on the team, Nathan Boyle and Shane McGrath, as well as Mick McGrath in the back room team.
2010 was the last time that Aodh Ruadh played in division two, but after six long hard years in the third tier of Donegal football Ballyshannon have finally made their return to the second flight with a 0-12 to 0-8 win over Downings in Father Tierney Park. Aodh Ruadh were quick out of the traps and had a seven point lead run up with 20 minutes on the clock. Downings fought back though to make the interval scores 0-8 to 0-5 and keep the result in the balance. On the mark for Peter Gallagher’s men in a turbo charged first half scorers were Diarmaid McInerney (2), Seamus Kane (2), David McGurrin, Jason Granaghan, David Dolan, and Gillespie. At the start of second half Paddy Gillespie added a good score to stretch the lead to four points. but Downings kept in touch with two good points and could have added a goal but for a fine save from Peter Boyle. A Dolan free settled the hosts again, but that was quickly cancelled out by a short Downings free to leave the game at 0-10 to 0-8. Aodh Ruadh struggled to find the target for the final quarter, with a goal opportunity from Kane well saved by the Downings keeper. However Damian Cleary and Paddy Gillepsie stepped up and got late scores to put the game out of reach. Stand out performers on a historic day for Aodh Ruadh were the Jason Granaghan, Niall Harley, Paddy Gillespie and Diarmaid McInerney.
The reserves made it double joy for the club with a comprehensive 1-14 to 0-7 victory over Downings.
Next up for Aodh Ruadh is visit to Burt in the league. The reserves get the action underway at 5.30pm followed by the senior encounter at 6pm.
The under 16s came up short against Dungloe in Father Tierney Park last Wednesday, losing out on a scoreline of 1-8 to 0-17. The next scheduled fixture is in Fintra on Sunday 28th August against Killybegs.
The under 8s will be travelling to Ardara for a blitz this Saturday. The action will be getting under way at 11am. We will be meeting at the park at 9.45pm to arrange lifts for any players who require them and heading to Ardara at 9.55am.
Under 8 and under 10 training continues this Friday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh.
Hurling
The senior hurlers sank to a 3-18 to 1-7 defeat against Saint Eunan’s in round four of the championship. They are due out in their next championship tie this Friday when they travel to Ballybofey to take on MacCumhaill’s at 7pm.
The under 12s and under 16s continued their good form in the league last Thursday. The under 12s were at home to Buncrana and put in a great performance winning the game comfortably. It was an impressive performance and our first win over Buncrana at this level in a long number of years. They are home again this Thursday against Burt.
The under 16s played Carndonagh in Convoy. For a variety of reasons we only had 12 players, but they put in a great effort and ran out winners in a tight game on a 7-4 to 5-6 scoreline.
On Sunday we had our annual trip to Croke Park for the All-Ireland semi-final between Tipperary and Galway and like previous years we were treated to a classic game. It was a great trip and as usual the lads were very well behaved and were a credit to the club and their families.
Ladies
Commiserations to the Donegal team and Sarah Patton who put in a good showing against a strong Dublin outfit.
Under 16 training continues at 8pm on Wednesdays.
Under 13 girls training continues this Wednesday at 6.30pm and Friday at 6.30pm. The first league match for the side is on Saturday, 3rd September, so it is essential we see as many as possible at training between now and then.
