Aodh Ruadh GAA Club Notes 15/06/2016

By Sinéad Breen Donegal PRO Wed 15th Jun

Football

The Aodh Ruadh seniors and reserves have the much anticipated trip to Naomh Bríd this Saturday, 18th June. The reserve game throws in at Páirc Naomh Bríd at 6pm followed by the seniors at 7.30pm.

The Frank O’Neill Memorial tournament final took place last Saturday and was was won by Dylan Gallagher’s team who defeated Michael McKenna’s side in a hard fought game which saw some excellent passages of football from both teams. JC Mc Garrigle, Pauric Keenaghan, and Nathan Owens-Kelly all had excellent games for the winning team. Captain of the team Dylan Gallagher played a captain’s role and deservely got man of the match. The sides were evenly matched in the first quarter being level on a number of occasions, but Dylan’s team upped the pace and scored a couple of goals before half-time. McKenna hit back after the break and Dylan Gallagher and Senan Rooney traded goals as did Pauric Keenaghan and Michael McKenna. Whatever chance McKenna had was put to bed when Dylan Gallagher hit two goals and a few points. Michael McKenna did get a goal back, but a couple of excellent points from the left boot of Jack McSherry put the game beyond reach and Dylan Gallagher lifted the Frank O’Neill cup. Thanks to Referee David Hoey who did an excellent job and also thanks to David O’Donnell of Kernan’s Spar for the crisps and drinks after the game. We have pictures from the final up on aodhruadh.org.

Aodh Ruadh secured their place in the under 12 divisional final last Wednesday when they defeated Naomh Conaill up in Glenties. The senior game was open and free flowing and the Ballyshannon boys were well in control winning 6-16 to 4-12. The Reserves came out on top in their game too with only two points to spare. There were some lovely football skills on show in both games and the lads showed great character and teamwork in overcoming two good Glenties teams. On Saturday we welcomed Saint Eunan’s to the park for a challenge match. The reserves had a great battle with the Letterkenny Junior side while the seniors overcame a slow start to play with style and fluidity. Great support play and improved passing in the second half made the difference and our boys won it well. We are grateful to the Letterkenny mentors and players for making the trip up and to the parents of our boys who laid on the hospitality afterwards in the club house. This Wednesday, 15th June, the under 12s play the last round of the league against Dungloe at home. Throw-in for the Reserves is at 7pm.

On Thursday evening 15 Aodh Ruadh and Realt na Mara players from local schools participated in our qualification round for the Donegal Creameries sponsored skills competition.  Mairtín McGarrigle came out on top with 95 points and went on to the County Final in MacCumhaill Park the next night. Mairtín, representing Gaelscoil Éirne and Aodh Ruadh came fourth out of 33 in the county final skills competition. There was very little between the scores of the first five boys with only the bare minimum of points and fractions of seconds separating them. Martín scored 105 out of a possible 130 and did the club, his school and his family proud. Maith thú a Mhairtín.

Congratulations to Aaron Neilan, Ryan Keenaghan and Damian Weber who saw action for Donegal during the half-time games in the Ulster SFC quarter-final in MacCumhaill Park on Sunday.

Under 10, under 8 and under 6 training continues as usual this Friday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at Páirc Aoidh Ruadh.

Ladies

The under 14 girls A county semi-final originally scheduled for Tuesday has fallen foul of board room maneuverings. We await the outcome of Tuesday night’s Ladies County Board meeting for further clarity. There will be training as usual on Tuesday from 5.45pm to 7pm.

The under 12 girls wrapped up their Southern league campaign with five wins from five against a brave Kilcar outfit in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh last Thursday. Lucy Barden was excellent at half back while Cara Davit was also very effective at corner back. Up front Aoibhínn McGarrigle was on fire while Annie Keon, Áine Hill, Lucy Gallagher, Clodagh O’Connor and Emer O’Brien all scored heavily. There is a change to under 12 girls training for coming week. We are going Wednesday 6.30pm to 7.30pm. Then we are going Friday 5.30pm. After this we revert to the usual Thursday and Saturday slots.

Under 8 and under 10 training continues at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh on Mondays from 6-7pm.

Hurling

The Aodh Ruadh hurlers registered a good win the Ulster Táin League Division 2B when they saw off Tyrone outfit Naomh Columcille on a 1-13 to 1-8 scoreline on Sunday.

The under 14s were away to Letterkenny Gaels in the Championship semi-final on Thursday last. The lads were much too strong for the Gaels lads and were convincing winners. They are now through to the B championship final where they will play the strong amalgamated Dungloe / Gaoth Dobhair team. Date and venue are yet to be confirmed. After a couple of months planning the under 14s are away to Tipperary this weekend for the National Finals of Féile na nGael, it promises to be a great weekend for the lads on and off the field. We are being hosted by the Fethard club in South Tipperary. We are in a group with Fethard, Carrick Davin’s of Tipperary and Ballyvarley from Down. We leave early on Friday morning and that evening will play two games in Carrick-on-Suir at the home of the first GAA President Maurice Davin. After the games we return to Fethard to our host families. On Saturday morning we play our last group game in Fethard, the rest of Saturday’s programme is dependent on where we finish in the group. On Sunday we are heading to Semple Stadium for the Munster Senior Hurling Championship semi-final between Tipperary and Limerick which is sure to be a great game to finish what should be a great weekend for the lads. We have got great support from local businesses towards this trip and all will be acknowledged on social media during the week.

Raise a cup for MND

We encourage club members to come out and support the coffee morning in Kilbarron House this Saturday 18th June. It runs from 10am to 4pm and is a fund-raiser for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association. The association supports people with motor neurone disease, their families and carers through advocacy, home and professional support, and research into the condition. John Larkin has recently being diagnosed with MND, he has been a tireless worker for the Aodh Ruadh club for a long number of years and we would encourage all club people and others in the locality to support this worthwhile event.
