Football
Aodh Ruadh’s winning start to the season continued last Saturday when the seniors travelled to Letterkenny and overcame the Gaels on a scoreline of 1-10 to 1-15. The visitors opened with five points from Johnny Gethins, Diarmaid McInerney, Conor Patton and a brace from Michael ‘Sticky’ Ward. Letterkenny rallied after that, but David McGurrin added two more scores to leave a point in at the break with the scores pegged at 1-3 to 0-7. A point from David Dolan and a poacher’s goal from McInerney followed by a point from Oisín Roper gave Ballyshannon the perfect start to the new half. The hosts fought hard to get back into the game, but Aodh Ruadh had enough in hand to see out the win with insurance scores from David Dolan and Pauric Patton seeing them take full points. That result puts Aodh Ruadh five points clear at the top of the division three table. We have teams and pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org.
The reserves have been having a mixed old season of it, but they did well to get a hard-earned away win against Letterkenny Gaels on a scoreline of 2-5 to 2-2 in the curtain raiser on Saturday. They now sit second from top in the division in a clump of three teams on ten points just behind Buncrana on 12. We have pictures and a full report from the game up on aodhruadh.org.
This weekend Naomh Ultan are the visitors to Ballyshannon as the league programme continues apace. The reserve game throws in at Father Tierney Park at 6pm followed by the seniors at 7.30pm.
Well done to the Donegal minors on their victory over Antrim in Corrigan Park, Belfast on Sunday evening. It was nip and tuck, in the first half, but Donegal edged the second to run out 2-11 to 2-7 winners. Well done to our own Nathan Boyle who started at wing forward, Shane McGrath who came on early in the second half and made an important contribution to the win and Oisin Rooney who is on the panel too. Donegal will be on their travels again for the Ulster semi-final when they face Monaghan in Donaghmoyne on Saturday 25th June, throw in 5pm.
The under 12s have a game this Wednesday at home against Saint Naul’s. All players to be up at the park for 7pm at the latest with the game throwing-in at 7.30pm.
Last Saturday some 37 under 10 players took part in challenge matches against Melvin Gaels and Realt na Mara Bundoran. Our Development team defeated Realt na Mara in their first game before going down to Melvin Gaels. Ben Daly, Michael Keown and Matthew Fox all excelled on the day. Our first team won their two games against Melvin Gaels and Bundoran. Jack McCadden in goals, Dara McGloin in defence and Tommy Clyne and James Monaghan all starred in the games. Thanks to senior team players Conor Patton and Paddy Gillespie who reffed and all the parents who helped out on the day.
The under 8s have their second blitz of the season this Saturday when they travel to Ardara. We will be assembling at the park at 9.15am to arrange transport for any players who don’t have a lift and departing at 9.30am. Games start in Ardara at 11am.
Under 10, under 8 and under 6 training continues as usual this Friday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at Páirc Aoidh Ruadh.
Ladies
Realt Ruadh came up short against Convoy in the division 2 shield competition on Sunday with the visitors to Bundoran’s Gaelic Park running out winners on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-9.
Under 14 girls training continues on Tuesday evening at 5.45pm. Aodh Ruadh will be playing Bundoran in Gaelic Park this Thursday at 6pm. Players are to be at the park for 4.50pm and we would appreciate if parents could drive. We hope to play MacCumhaill’s in the final league game this Saturday. Management will have details across the course of the week. These two games are the final fixtures in the Southern section of the league, so come out and get behind the girls as they bid to finish with a flourish.
The under 12 girls made their long trip up the road Glencolumbcille last Wednesday well worth while with a good win. The conditions were perfect for football and Naomh Columba proved a strong test. Cara Davitt and Niamh Gallagher both impressed in defence as did Megan Kane who was going well until foot injury saw her exit the fray. In the middle Caoimhe Hughes-O’Brien gave an outstanding display of reading the game and tireless work with Lucy McGlynn not far behind. Up front Evelyn Rose Gallagher showed great determination in the attack and earned her 2-2, while Aoibhínn McGarrigle was full value for her 1-1 too. Thanks to the Naomh Columba club for looking after us so royally after the game. This week it’s home comforts for Aodh Ruadh as they entertain Killybegs on Tuesday evening at Father Tierney Park. The game throws-in at 7pm and all players are to be at the park no later than 6.30pm. Training as usual on Thursday at 6pm.
Under 8 and under 10 training continues at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh on Mondays from 6-7pm.
The Duck Race on Saturday was a great success and blessed with good weather. The first prize was scooped by Mark Ward’s duck, with Johnny Parton’s coming home second, following by the Hughes family duck in third. Many thanks to all those who contributed, sold lines and helped out on the day.
Hurling
The senior hurlers have been having mixed fortunes in Ulster Táin League Division 2B and that didn’t change last Sunday when they made the long trip to Garvaghey only to lose to Armagh outfit Sean Treacy’s on a scoreline of 1-16 to 0-4. The next scheduled league fixture is another away trip, this time to Saint Eunan’s on Sunday 3rd July with a 4pm throw-in.
The under 14s are up against a strong Setanta team in the Division 2 League Final on Thursday night, venue to be confirmed. The lads have worked very hard to get to this final. They have put in a good effort throughout the league. This young squad will be up against a physically stronger Setanta team, but they will give it their all as they attempt to claim this title.
Well done to under 12 hurler Daire McDevitt who won the County Community Games long puc in Milford on Sunday.
Training for all age groups continues at 12 noon on Sunday.
Cash for clubs
We all know there’s plenty of Ballyshannon money going into Bundoran, so it’s about time we got a bit back out of them! Lidl, as sponsors of Ladies Gaelic Football, have a new in-store competition which started on Thursday 26th May and runs until Sunday, 10th July inviting customers to nominate their local Ladies Gaelic Football Club to win cash prizes. Using the nomination card offered at the till with every purchase – two cards given for over €20 spent, customers can vote for their local club from the list of clubs on the in-store competition unit. €1,000 is available to be won in each store. Obviously we’d prefer people kept their trade in Ballyshannon as much as possible, but if you are shopping abroad make sure that Aodh Ruadh gets your vote at the Lidl check out.

Ten years ago…
Aodh Ruadh u-14s recorded a resounding victory over a weakened Ardara team last Wednesday week. Luke Toland played exceptionally well for the Ballyshannon team and Peter Boyle was top-scorer registering a series of fine goals. There were also good performances from Conor Patton in goal and Martin Larkin on the back line, both dealing capably with anything that came their way. Stephen Clarke and Niall Thomas also turned in noteworthy performances.
