TOM FARREN MEMORIAL CUP Malin 2-14 Urris 0-16
Malin beat Urris in their second match of the Tom Farren Memorial Cup at Connolly park in perfect condtitions on Saturday evening on a scoreline of Malin 2-14 Urris 0-16. Kevin McLaughlin’s early free was canceleled out by an Anthony Kelly free before Urris went ahead from Ryan Doherty after a good score from a cross field ball. Kelly responded with two frees and another free from Darren McLarkey to edge Malin two ahead. Kevin McLaughlin kept Urris in touch after winning a turnover and making no mistake from the right. Dan McDaid worked a short free and turned to score from the right to keep Malin ahead though it was short lived as Urris came back through a Ryan Doherty score from distance and then McLaughlin did well from a long range free to put the Urris men up. Darren McLarkey scored from play off his left before Conor Bradley and Gary Farren fired over to leave the game all square at half time 0-07 to 0-07. Paul McLaughlin opened Malin’s second half account from the throw in with an effort from distance. Conor Bradley replied again for the visitors. Anthony Kelly scored again after the busy Christopher Doherty won a free . McLaughlin then caught a great ball above his head before jinking and turning to score another leveling point. Malin then pushed on and in the ‘championship quarter’ they hit 2-02 to Urris’s 0-01 to effectively put the game to bed. Paul McLaughlin started it off with a well hit 45’ and then Darren McLarkey scored to stretch the lead to two. The same player got the key goal soon after as Malin stretched out to 1-11 to 0-09. Urris almost replied right away when Michael Grant pointed when a goal chance might have been on. Danny McCarron then swiveled and scored a second goal for Malin to move 2-11 to 0-09 ahead. In fairness to Urris they responded with seven out of the next ten scores but Malin had done enough to get their first victory in the competition and remain unbeaten in their pre-season campaign to date.
