Glenswilly GAA notes for August 25th
Glenswilly lays Finbarr to rest
The huge attendance at the funeral of club stalwart Finbarr Glackin on
Sunday last spoke volumes of the highest regard in which he was held
by club and the community.
A founding member and the club president, Finbarr epitomised all that
is good about the GAA and the local community.
From the first green shoots of Glenswilly GAA Club, Finbarr had been
one of the club’s making driving force and held numerous positions
throughout his life.
The club, from juvenile members, up to the senior team and club
executive, formed a guard of honour as his remains were brought for
funeral mass.
GAA club representatives from across Donegal including the Donegal
County Executive turned up to pay their last respects to Finbarr.
The huge numbers at his wake at his home in Barack was also testament
to the high regard in which he was held by neighbours and friends.
Club chairman Peter McConnell expressed his sympathy on behalf of the
club to Finbarr’s wife and eight sons and extended family circle.
Just hours after his funeral mass, the senior team put in a convincing
display to reach the quarter finals of the senior club championship.
No doubt Finbarr was looking down on a rain-soaked Foxhall with a proud smile.
May he rest in peace.
U13s enjoy great friendly
The Under 13s had a great first outing of the season when they
traveled the short distance to take on Letterkenny Gaels. It was the
first game of the season for both tams and a great warm-up game for
the season ahead was enjoyed by both sides. Thanks to Gaels manager
James Freyne for hosting the game and the best of luck to the Gaels
for their season ahead. Training of the U13 boys continues on Friday
nights and txts will go out to players abut times, etc.
Under 10s trip to Malin
The Under 10s took two teams to Malin Town on Saturday last for a
terrific underage blitz involving several clubs. Both teams, under
coaches Gerard McGrenra, Paddy McAteer, Lee Gildea and Labhaoise
Maguire, turned in some super displays of football. The club would
like to thank the Malin club for their terrific organisation and
hospitality on the day. Many parents also traveled the long distance
to support the young players and this was very much appreciated by the
club.
Seniors
Despite the atrocious conditions, the seniors enjoyed a solid
championship win over Malin on Sunday evening last. A great team
display by the lads saw them through to the quarter final of the
competition. Keep it up lads.
Executive meeting
The monthly meeting of the club executive will take place on Monday
evening next at 9pm. All are encouraged to attend to discuss a number
of issues.
Bingo
The bingo continues to b a solid source of revenue for the club and
continues each Wednesday night in the club. Anybody who can give a
hand on the night is asked to contact Paul Lapsley.
Notes
If anybody has anything for the club notes, can they please forward
them to stephenwmaguire@gmail.com before Monday night.
