DONEGAL GAA HEALTH AND WELLBEING CONFERENCE / INFORMATION EVENING ON WEDNESDAY APRIL 15TH 2015

Many leading health experts nationally and locally are contributing to the first ever Donegal GAA Health & Wellbeing conference on April 15th from 7.00pm (registration from 6.00pm) in Jackson’s Hotel Ballybofey.
This free event should be of particular benefit to players, coaches, managers, referees and club officers in Ladies and Men’s Gaelic Football, Hurling, Camogie, Handball and Rounders
Especially welcome are the new Club Health and Wellbeing Officers.
Among those presenting will be Ciaran McLaughlin (former Tyrone County Chairman) who will give a brief presentation on how the GAA identified Health and Wellbeing as something that they should adopt.
Colin Regan the Community & Health Manager in Croke Park will give an overview of Health and Wellbeing within the GAA.
Dr. Charlie McManus the Donegal Team Doctor from 2010 to 2014 will focus on Cardiac Screening and Concussion.
Ronan Doherty and Maria Faulkner, both lecturers in Letterkenny Institute of Technology will present on ‘Nutrition in Sport’ and ‘Physiology and Training’. They will include a ‘case study’ on Donegal Senior player Karl Lacey who will be present to discuss his day to day routine.
Professor Niall Moyna School of Health and Human Performance DCU will reflect on his recent research on the benefits of exercise in the prevention of ‘early onset cardiac disease’ and the effects of drugs and alcohol on training playing and recovery.
A number of the Donegal Senior men’s players will be participating including Michael Murphy – The Iconic Donegal All Ireland Winning Captain, Ryan McHugh who is our Road Safety Ambassador and Karl Lacey who recently completed his Masters in Sports Science
The event will also showcase many of the supports that are available in the community, including the Samaritans, Aware, Console, HSE Mental Health Services, Drug and Alcohol Misuse Services, SafeTalk / Assist, Mental Health Ireland, Jigsaw, Donegal Mind Wellness, Road Safety Authority, Pieta House, Darkness into Light, Social Proscribing and Donegal Community Library, Grow, Solas and Farm Safety.
