By Sinéad Breen Donegal PRO Tue 22nd Jul

Double joy for Donegal

Congratulations to Niall Harley and Colm Kelly as they claimed the Ulster Minor title in great style, defeating Armagh on a scoreline of 2-12 to 0-10. Well done also to Aodh Ruadh hurler Jamie Brennan who scored 1-2 in the win, and also to Mick McGrath, Anthony McGrath and Gary Walsh who were involved in the back room team. Congratulations are due as well to the senior team and management too on recapturing the Anglo Celt for the third time in four years. Well done in particular to Aodh Ruadh alumnus John Duffy on playing his part in the success. We have a three galleries of photos from a Sunday of marvelous memories on aodhruadh.org. We have gallery of pictures from the minor game, then a gallery of images from the senior game which includes shots of Ballyshannonites on the Saint Tiernach’s sward during the presentation, then finally we have a superb gallery of images from a super homecoming at the Bridgend. A great day for club and county.

Football

Aodh Ruadh return to league action this weekend when they make the trip to Inishowen for another crucial game in the promotion race. The reserves take on their Urris counterparts this Saturday at 6pm, with the senior game following at 7.30pm.

The under 16s were 4-17 to 2-8 victors over Naomh Muire on Friday evening in Father Tierney Park. The game was a dead rubber for Naomh Muire as they were already confined to bottom place in the division, so the Annagry players and management deserve great credit for making the long trip and playing the fixture and giving over 40 players football. They gave the homesters a good test too in a game which was played in a good spirit. Shane McGrath and Daniel Warnock both stood out for the Ernesiders and got among the goals too, as did Cáelán Drummond. Shane Dorrian also proved a handful in the attack for an over-stretched Annagry rearguard. Defensively it was very disciplined display with Ryan McKenna, Cian McGloin, Brendan Gillespie and Jason Granaghan. We have pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org. Ballyshannon now top the Southern Minor Board division one table and await the result of Tuesday evening’s clash between Naomh Conaill and Dungloe to determine who their opponents will be in the Southern semi-final. At the time of mailing it looked like that game would be happening sometime early next week.

The under 12s have a challenge match this Wednesday evening against Melvin Gaels in Kinlough. Players and parents/guardians to meet at 6pm at Father Tierney Park. We are looking for parents/guardians to help with transport. Text Martin on 0862588796 to let him know whether or not your player will be attending and if they will need a lift to the game. Training continues on Saturday from 10.45am to 12 noon.

The under 10s had a successful and enjoyable trip to Dunkineely on Saturday morning. On a hot, close day they played five games against mixed ability Four Masters teams, winning all but one of the games. There was some super football played by the Ballyshannon lads throughout the competition against a committed Donegal town outfit. Pulling on the white and green for Aodh Ruadh on Saturday were: Daniel Breen Brosnan, Conor Cleary, Oisín Daly, Ryan Daly, Shane Delahunty, Darragh Dolan Flood, JJ Doran, Finn Gallagher, Jack Gallagher, Aaron Horan, Eoghan Kelly, Art Mag Fhionnghaile, Lorc Mag Fhionnghaile, Grainne Maguire, James McGinley, Ronan McKenna, Cian McKenna, Cillian Meehan, Aaron Neilan, David Roper, Drew Ryan, Aidan Sweeny and Aonghus Sweeny. Training as usual on Wednesday at 6.30pm and Saturday from 11am to 12 noon.

The Aodh Ruadh under 8s fielded two strong mixed ability teams at a blitz in Donegal town on Saturday morning. The first team put in a good all round team performance, competing well in both games with Jack McCadden scoring some good points. The other Aodh Ruadh team again produced a good all round team performance, but at midfield Barry Campbell and Tommy Clyne were exceptional with Barry scoring three goals and Tommy taking some great long range points. Taking the field for Aodh Ruadh were: Killian Bradshaw, Neil Brown, Barry Campbell, Tommy Clyne, Ronan Delahunty, Liam Doogan, Stephen Doran, Tom Holland, Micheál Keown, Donagh Kelly, Jack McCadden, Kian McDonald, Garvey Meade, Ted O’Donnell, Conor O’Mahoney, Dara O’Mahoney, Cillian Slevin and James Ward. There will be an under 8 blitz on Saturday 26th August in Father Tierney Park. We will be hosting Bundoran, Saint Naul’s and Four Masters. Players are to be up at the park for 10.20am, with the first game throwing in at 11.00am. Players are also asked to bring club shorts and socks. With close on 100 players expected at the park we ask each family with players to supply a loaf of sandwiches, tray of buns or similar to help with the catering on the day. Also, if you can offer any help with the serving up of the food and drinks in the Aras all assistance will be welcomed. Under 8 and under 6 training continues this Friday in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh at 6.30pm.

Hurling

Aodh Ruadh came up short against Ballela in the Ulster Táin League last Saturday, the Ards outfit running out 4-13 to 0-10 winners.

On Thursday night last an under-strength under 12 team suffered a heavy defeat at home against Buncrana. They have no game this week.

The under 16s made the long trip to Carndonagh and came away with a well deserved win against the Carn men. They are on the road again this week as they play Saint Eunan’s in Letterkenny.

Aodh Ruadh hosted the fourth annual Peter O’Keefe under 16 Ulster/Connacht tournament last Saturday with teams from Derry, Tyrone, South Ulster, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo and Donegal taking part. We have some pictures from the tournament up on aodhruadh.org.

Ronan Matthews has a couple of galleries up on the Aodh Ruadh CLG page from ladies games in the past week. The first is the meeting of the Donegal and Sligo ladies in Father Tierney Park last Wednesday. The second is the Aodh Ruadh under 16s clash with Saint Naul’s in Mountcharles also last Wednesday.

Well done to the under 12 girls who had another good showing on Thursday evening. They won five out of six halves in Bundoran when they took on Killybegs, Bundoran and Saint Naul’s. We have some shots from the blitz up on aodhruadh.org.

Training for under 8s, under 10s and under 12s is now on its summer break.

Summer camp

The Summer Camp established by the Park/Development Committee over 20 years ago, and led since then by Sylvester Maguire, has been very well attended over the past two weeks with the highest numbers for some time. The value to the club of the Schools Coaching Initiative, established earlier this year, was clear to be seen with many of the children benefiting from that Scheme, following-through and participating in the Summer Camp. Well done to all involved. There are some pictures from the summer camp by Ronan Matthews up on the Aodh Ruadh CLG Facebook page.

Fitness Trail fund-raiser

Over the next two weeks or so work will resume at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh, concentrating on completing the Fitness Trail and providing a Hurling/Rebound Wall for Youth Coaching of all Gaelic Games. Tom Daly is coordinating a small fund-raiser to meet some of the costs of these works. The Family Fund-raiser is a simple format where a family hosts 10 people at a meal in their home for a donation of €20 each. To participate you complete a Registration Form which is returned to Tom Daly, host your table on a day which suits you or before Saturday August 30th and make a return of €200 on September 1st. Each person who participates and makes a €20 donation which will be entered in a draw for two stand tickets for the 2014 All-Ireland Final and a double room and dinner for two in the Croke Park Hotel on Saturday September 20th, the night before the Final. Details from Tom Daly or e-mail ftdaly@hotmail.com. Aodh Ruadh supporters living away from Ballyshannon are particularly welcome to participate.

Fantasy race for Sam

After another great weekend on the pitch in Clones, we now have all four provincial winners. With the ten bonus points on offer for the team winning their provincial finals, it is Barry Travers and his team, Still The Greatest Reserve, who are on top this week with 187 points. The 40 points he collected this week, which also got him highest score of the week, from Donegal and Dublin ensure he takes his place at the top for the first time this year. In second place is John Patton Jr and his team, Yes Patsy, on 179 points. John Keon and his team, Lakeside Lads, are in third place on 178, with Pat Gruddy and his team, Mayo This Year, a further point behind on 178. Conal Gallagher and his team The Concrete Cs are in 5th place with 171 points. At the opposite end of the table, its all over. Michael Dolan and his team Dolans Dragons have all four of his teams and players out of the All-Ireland series for this year and his paltry return of 50 points leaves him rock bottom and €100 better off. As always the leader board is available every Tuesday on aodhruadh.org, as well as Ballybookies, The Bridgend Bar, Owen Roe’s Bar and upstairs in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh.
