Red Hughs Club Notes 5/5/2014

By Sinéad Breen Donegal PRO Mon 5th May

Senior Men
The senior men had contrasting results at the weekend on Saturday evening they had a great victory at home over table toppers Aodh Ruadh Ballyshannon. With the team five points down at the break they put in a brilliant second half performance to run out worthy winners  on the night. The final score Red Hughs 1-11 Aodh Rua 0-12
On Bank Holiday Monday they had a game to forget. From the first whistle it was clear that Naomh Brid Ballintra were intent on getting their first win of their league campaign. They were hungry for the ball and bossed the game from the off. The Reds really struggled to get to grips with the game and only played in spurts. Nobody could disagree that the best team won on the day. The final score was Naomh Brid 0-13 Red Hughs 0-9
Reserves
The reserves were got off to a bad start conceding a goal in the first minute and had an up hill battle against a very experienced Ballyshannon outfit. But the Red Hughs lads never gave up and were in fact eight points down at one stage in the second half. But the lads fought to the end and gave the Erne siders a battle right to the final whistle. The final scoreline was 4-08 to 2-10.
The reserves were the highlight of the holiday weekend. They set about their business as usual and definitely lacked no fight. With five minors lining out in the defence it was great to see so many young lads on the pitch. It was a really tight first half with little between the sides. In the second half the youthfulness of the Reds was plain to be seen with the the older legs of the Ballintra men tiring. The lads took control in the second half and withstood a late rally from Naomh Brid to run out winners on a scoreline of 1-11 to 1-9.

Under 16 Boys
The u-16 boys played their first game of the league at home to Mc Cools on Friday evening. The young lads put up an almighty fight against a very strong Mc Cools team and in fact looked like they were going to win the game being four points up with ten minutes to go and level with only five minutes on the clock. But the legs tired and Mc Cools took control in the final minutes to run out winners on the night. Well done to everyone on a very spirited performance they will no doubt be a match for any team in the games to come.
A Big Thank You
A big thank you to Mark Mc Menamin Construction who sponsored a new set of jerseys for the lads. Pics will be up as soon as we can track him down for a photo.
Minor Boys
The minors overcame a strong Na Rossa / Dungloe challenge in Glenfin last Wednesday evening to reach the Division two County Final. In a nervy first fifteen minutes the Reds were creating a lot of chances but were not taking full advantage of them. Johnny carlin, Stephen Mc Menamin & James Carlin put the cross lads three up before the challengers got their first score. The lads then got two more scores through Odharan Doherty and Ryan Bradley. The Na Rossa Dungloe lads then added another two points before the Reds broke on the counter attack with a long ball through to Justin Mc Bride who picked out Corey Gallagher in the box who took full advantage and finished off a great move to the back of the net.  The opposition cancelled out the goal with a well worked goal of their own within two minutes. The Reds then upped the tempo and slotted over three more points before halftime through Johnny Carlin, & James with another two points. The half time score was 1-8 to 1-3 The Na Rossa boys started strong in the second half and puled the game back to a two points. With the pressure building on the Reds Corey Gallagher got his second goal of the game at a really crucial stage to calm the nerves. Gavin Wright picked him out with a terrific pass and he converted calmly to the net once again. The goal was backed up with two more points one from Johnny and another from James to open the gap to seven once again. With only ten minutes left the Reds were in the driving seat. The men from the West scored their final point of the game and The Reds added two more one from Cathal Doherty and one from Johnny Carlin to run out winners on a score line of 2-12 to 1-7 With the other semi final ending in a draw and the replay fixed for Bank Holiday Monday the lads are still unsure who they will meet in the final. Star man on the night was Corey Gallagher with Two goals at very crucial times.
