Senior Men

The senior lads played Naomh Ultan in the final game if the group stage of the championship on Sunday afternoon in Dunkineely. With the winner of the clash getting an automatic semi final spot the Stakes were high. The Red Hughs lads were without a number of starting players due to work commitments and injuries so it was going to be a tough battle.
The game was played in blustery conditions making scoring tough for both teams. It was the home side who settled quicker getting two early scores before Damien brown Pointed a long range free to open the Red Hughs lads account. The Dunkineely lads were coping better with the conditions and tagged on another two points before the Reds got one back before the break. Half Time Red Hughs 0-2 Naomh Ultan 0-4

The home side started brightly in the second half scoring within the first minute. Red Hughs got another through Calvin Bradley to keep them within touching distance. This was to be the Cross lads last score of the game as the Dunkineely men powered home kicking six unanswered points to run out deserved winners on the day. The final score was Red Hughs 0-3 Naomh Ultan 0-12.

The lads now play Convoy in the quarter final next Saturday in O Donnell Park Letterkenny Throw in 7pm. Come out and support the lads. Hopefully we will have a few players back and available for next weeks game. Training this week on Tuesday and Thursday within extra session on Friday.

Reserves

The reserves bowed out of the championship on Saturday evening against St Eunans in Milford. It was a very tight game from the start with never more than two points between the teams. The young lads from Red Hughs showed great heart and determination but unfortunately it was not to be their night. No doubt there will be more to come from this great young side. Best wishes to Jason Sweeney who picked up a nasty injury during the game breaking his hand in 6 places. Get well soon Jason. The final score was Red Hughs 2-5 St Eunans 0-12

Under 21’s

The Under 21s made it 2 from 2 after a good victory over a determined Fanad Gaels side. Red Hughs started the game brightly with a Colm Melaugh point before Fanad responded with a free. Pauric McMenamin fisted a nice point for the home side before Fanad again responded. Melaugh pointed from a free and Ronan Gallen timed his run to perfection before slotting over. Another Fanad score kept the minimum between the teams before Melaugh and a fortunate Gary Kelly goal extended the home sides advantage to 1-05 to 0-03. Thomas McMenamin with a trade mark point finished the scoring for the Reds before the break. Red Hughs were alot more composed in front of the posts in this game than in previous games. The defense always provides the platform for the attack and held held firm to limit Fanad to 3 points from frees. The second half opened well again for Red Hughs with Thomas McMenamin winning the throw up and got fouled. Calvin Bradley took advantage from the resulting play notching his first point of the game. Stephen McMenamin made a great run and fed brother Thomas for his second trade mark score of the game. Fanad responded with 2 points before Bradley showing his class knocked over a lovely point from the left side. Fanad were reduced to 14 men mid way thru the second period for a second bookable offence. A dangerous elbow but thankfully we lived to tell the tale. Carlin stepped up with a lovely point from the right to extend the Hughs lead 1-10 to 0-05. Fanad got a late consolation before sharp shooter Thomas McMenamin grabbed his 3rd from iLár na Párce. Bradleys strong running led to his 3rd and the final score of the game to see Red Hughs run out comfortable winners in the end. Final score from Monellan Park 1-12 to 0-06. A very solid team performance from the team with a strong panel of players with 3 players also missing due to pre booked holidays and exams. Minor Boys

Minor Division 2 Championship Quarter Final Red Hugh v Mac Cumhaills

In this eagerly anticipated battle of these fierce rivals it was the Cross lads who opened the scoring with a pointed free from James Carlin. It was a tense opening ten minutes with both side spurring chances to take control. The visitors broke from midfield and found a man in space inside who slotted the ball to the net to get their opening score that was quickly followed by a pointed free to put them 3 points up after 12 minutes. The Reds then upped the tempo and scored 4 unanswered points another from James Carlin, one from Ryan Bradley and two from Justin Mc Bride. The Mac Cumhaills lads scored another before the break to leave the sides all level at the break. 0-5 to 1-2

The Red Hughs lads were really up for the challenge in the second half and took the game to Mac Cumhaills. A long ball into the box was fisted over by Connor Gallagher and Carlin added two more to put the home side 3 up. The ever lively Justin Mc Bride then got his customary goal with ten minutes to go. Then young of Odharan Doherty scored the final and probably the best point of the game rolling around two defenders and slotting over from 35 yards. To their credit the visitors never gave up and kept plugging away till the end but there was just no way through the reds defence as they stood tall and put their bodies on the line to keep the Mac Cumhaills lads scoreless in the second half. It was a fantastic team performance from the young lads who now go forward to the championship semi final. Opponents and date tbc. Final score Red Hughs 1-9 Mac Cumhaills 1-2
