Pilot Cardiac Screening for Donegal Minor Panel

By PRO Donegal Wed 9th Apr

Cardiac ScreeningCardic Screening Cardic Screening agreed to implement this as policy in the county.

The GAA feels that it’s important that players are given an option as to whether they wish to be screened or not.

The GAA advise that the most effective way to identify risk is for players over the age of 14 to undergo cardiac screening on one occasion. It is also advised that this process be repeated before the age of 25.

If players wish to get screened, the best practice process which the Medical, Scientific and Welfare Committee of the GAA recommends is for players to visit their local GPs and screening should consist of completion of the GAA’s Cardiac Screening Questionnaire (See attachment), a Physical Examination and an ECG.

If the GP considers that the result of an ECG indicates that a particular player should be excluded from play, they he/she may post the ECG and completed questionnaire to Dr. Joseph Galvin in the Mater Private for his interpretation. The purpose of this is to eliminate false positives.

The cost of this interpretation is covered by the GAA, and the GP should explain in the cover letter that the GAA will be covering the cost of the interpretation as part of the GAA/GPA scheme set up in 2010.

Mailing address: Dr. Joe Galvin, Mater Private, Eccles Street, Dublin 7.
