Naomh Columba – Under 16s Division 3 Champions 2019

The Club year – 2019

2019 was an interesting year for CLG Naomh Columba. The club seen a lot of success at underage in the various teams in both the boys and girls grades. Shane Callaghan won the County Skills competition, a first for Naomh Columba, Our underage girls teams were very successful with our u14, u16 and Minor teams all winning county titles. Our ladies senior team won a County Gaeltacht title and an All Ireland 7s title and we’re very unlucky to lose out in both the Championship final and the Shield final.

Our Senior mens team were beaten in the last 8 of the championship and secured division 2 status for another year.  Our Reserve men were also beaten at the same stage of championship. Our underage lads all performed well in all the grades. On a sadder note we lost our club president Connie Beag Cunningham during the year. He will be sadly missed by all in the club.

Our Senior and Reserve mens’ teams both played in a very competitive and tough Division 2. Both teams performed well throughout the league and every game was very close and hard fought. We managed to secure our status again for another year. In championship, both teams exited at the quarter final stage. Our Senior team played some great football throughout and we’re very unlucky to lose out on the day. Our Reserves also played well and they were unlucky to lose out. Our u21 lads were beaten by St Eunans in the championship.

Our Senior ladies team on the other hand performed well in 2019. In early May they won the county Gaeltacht title in Gaoth Dobhair beating Cloich Cheann Fhaola in the final. They played well throughout the league and ended up finishing second in the South-West Division 3. The highlight of their season was winning the All Ireland 7’s Junior title in Dublin which was a great achievement. They were also unlucky to lose the championship final.

Naomh Columba had a good season at underage with both boys and girls in the various competitions. We had very big numbers this year on our u8 team. They played all spring and summer around various clubs and performed very well. A lot of hard work being done by John Kelly at the grade. Our U10 team also performed very well this year. Under manager Dermot Mc Guire the u10s very competitive in all their games. The team improved well as the year went on.

Our u12 team won our local competition “The Mary Catherine Cup” and also played very well in all their games winning their fair share. The U13 boys were unlucky to get beaten in the Southern league final after playing very well. The u14 boy’s team had a tough year but battled away really well all year despite being unlucky with injuries and low numbers at times.

Our u16 boys team under the guidance of Colin Mc Nelis had another good year, they were very unlucky to miss out on the league final while they made it all the way to the county championship final but we’re unlucky to lose out in a fantastic game of football. The lads beat some very good teams along the way and played well all season. Our Minor lads. competing in Division 1. more than held their own and were a match for every opposition. The lads under Noel Mc Ginley worked really well all year and made great strides gaining vital experience along the way.

Our u14 girls won a County title this year and had a very good year. The u16 girl’s team also won their county title and also went the full season unbeaten which is a fantastic achievement. Our minor girls also won the county title and went unbeaten to underpin the excellent work being done at underage in the club.

Naomh Columba – Under 12 Boys with the Mary Catherine Curran Cup

Review of the decade 2010-19
This past decade has been one of progress and re-building at Naomh Columba. The club are working really hard this past number of years both on and off the pitch.

At underage in both boys and girls codes huge strides have been made. All teams in both codes have performed very well in the main throughout the years. In the early part of the decade our senior team were plying their trade in Division 3 but only a couple years later got promoted, and now find ourselves established in Division 2 with an eye on improving again and moving up to Division 1 and senior championship.

As with any club this past decade has seen us lose some great characters and figures within our club. Our president Connie Beag Cunningham, Jimmy Beag Cunningham and Connie “ogie” O’Gara to name but a few. All these big characters will be sadly missed by all involved with the club. But their legacy remains and never will be forgotten. Everyone at the club respect our history and heritage and will continue to work hard to help our club develop at all levels into the future.
