Buncrana establihed themselves as a force to be reckoned within the Junior championship with an emphatic win over Carndonagh in Páirc Uí Dhochartaigh. Caolan McGonagle and John Campbell netted for Buncranncha while Darach O’Connor, back from his summer sojourn in the US, added 0-6. Christy McDaid got the Carndomhnaigh goal. A full report (below) was submitted by the Na Rossa PRO of their drawn game with Naomh Pádraig:

Dooey was the venue as Na Rossa hosted Naomh Padraig Lifford in the first round group A championship match of 2019. And what a game it was in perfect playing conditions. The home side opened the scoring with a point from play from center back John McDyre but Lifford quickly replied through Daniel Lynsey. Odhran Molloy and John Paul McCready gave Na Rossa a 2 point lead, both from frees, only to be pulled back level by Michael Ferry with 2 long distance frees. Ferry again put the away side into the lead for the first time. Na Rossa had the best of the next 5 minutes scoring 3 times without reply 2 from McCready and the lively Aidan McHugh scoring his first point of the day. Lifford’s first goal, from the impressive Ferry, was a pivotal score and gave Naomh Pádraigthe lead once again 1-4 to 0-6. McHugh restored the home side’s advantage with two frees but Lynsey leveled it up. Na Rossa finished the half the stronger as Odhran Molloy scored from play to give his side a half time lead, 0-9 to 1-5.

Na Rossa came out of the blocks the quicker at the start of the second half with points from Molloy and McHugh to give the home side a 3 point advantage. Paul Lynch pulled a point back for Lifford but with the next 3 unanswered points from Odhran Gallagher, JP McCready and Sean McMonagle, Na Rossa led 0-14 to 1-6. The tide turned again when Cailin Doherty pointed for Lifford and Ian Clampitt scored his side’s 2nd goal to leave the minimum between the sides again. Ferry levelled for Lifford and again it was game on. Molloy and Lynsey traded points before a strong 5 minutes spell gave Na Rossa a 3 point lead through Keelin Devenney, Molloy and McCready. A terrific finish by Lifford seen Lynsey score 3 unanswered points, the last being the final kick of the game to level the match. This was a terrific game of football played at a very high level with both teams now a lot to play for as Na Rossa travel to Buncrana and Lifford host Carndonagh.

Final score Na Rossa 0-18, Naomh Padraig Lifford 2-12.
