U16 Hurling

Our U16 hurlers played out a hard earned draw against a good Swatragh side on Sunday morning.
The game started brightly for the Scarvey boys who ran into an early lead with some well taken points from Arran Craig and young Liam O’Doherty, who chipped in with 1:1 in the first half. PJ McCarron was deadly from the placed ball and helped Buncrana to a 6 point lead at halftime. The second half saw the home side play into a stiff breeze and an early stoppage in play for a leg injury to a Swatragh player seemed to take the steam out of the home team. From then on they struggled to get going and were behind going into the closing seconds but a late point levelled the game.

No one said it would be easy in the Derry league but this group will know they can play better. Paul Tourish, despite a rib injury, was his usual steady self and was well supported by PJ, John Vaughan and Mathew Wilson. We struggled around the middle to gain clean ball which meant the forwards were starved of position. Dylan, Oisin, Ben, Niall and FIachra battled throughout but all will know that more will be needed in the later stages of the league.

Under 14 Hurling

The U14 Hurlers had their last league game last Thursday night. After a bad start to the league season the boys have finally found their form. They went into this game needing a win to secure at least a playoff place. They worked hard with Finn McLaughlin keeping a close eye on Four Masters main player and Oisin Kelly had a fine game between the posts. The boys got the reward for their collective efforts. Final score Four Masters 2-4 Buncrana 8-6.

PHEW! We made it!! The U14 Hurlers battled their way through Sunday’s league playoff against Dungloe/Gweedore. The boys got stuck in early and ended the 1st half with 9 points up. Dungloe/Gweedore didn’t give up but the Buncrana boys held their nerve to run out winners 3-7 to 3-0. This now leads to a league semi-final on Thursday against local rivals Burt who have home advantage. Throw in at 7. Well done boys on getting this far and good luck on Thursday.

Under 8 Boys Football

Our U8 Boys got their first Blitz of the Northern Board off to a great start in Newtown on Saturday, playing teams from N Colmcille, Lifford and Letterkenny Gaels. With Buncrana fielding 3 teams the level of skills are improving with every game. Well done to all the children involved and many thanks to the coaches and parents who travelled.

Senior Football

Buncrana v Naomh Colmcille

This was a low-scoring game with both teams placing the emphasis on defence. Neither team seemed confident about attacking nor taking the game to their opponents for fear of leaving themselves open at the back and giving away a losing score. However, as expected, the home team showed the most adventure. John Campbell scored the first point of the game on 15 minutes and Newton got on the scoreboard in the 20th minute. John Campbell put Buncrana ahead again 5 minutes later. Buncrana went in at half-time 0-3 to 0-1 ahead. The wet and blustery conditions certainly didn’t help a high scoring game but the Reserves match earlier saw plenty of scores as Buncrana won 2-9 to 1-8.

The second half saw Naomh Colmcille step up a gear but it was a slow gear! They had the advantage of the wind and possession but couldn’t make use of either to score, instead hitting many wides when scoring seemed easier. Still, Buncrana did enough to win and will be heartened by the result if not the performance. This team know they are capable of much better and they will surely pick themselves up from here and show what they can do.

Senior Hurlers

Our Senior Hurlers suffered a heavy defeat against a good Swatragh side on Friday night, travelling with a reduced panel due to college exams and County commitments. Our young side were given a bit of a lesson by the slicker, seasoned, Derry side, losing on a score line of 4:22 to 1:6.

But with only 9 points in it at half-time the early dismissal of a player left it an uphill battle. Paddy Wilson continued his impressive start to the year and will be happy with his efforts until a late arm injury forced his retirement. Darren Roe had 2 fine points; Aedan Stokes, as last week, settled as the game went on and will be delighted with his second half performance.

From the start of the season everyone knew that this was going to be the start of a long journey to establish ourselves as a senior hurling side. The test of this squads ability to recover from heavy defeats (and have no doubt they will come!), will be a measure of the calibre of players we have.

Next up is Slaughtneil at home on Friday night, throw in at 8pm and all support is welcome.

U16 Hurling

Fantastic news for the club that 5 of our U16 players have been selected for the Ulster Elite Academy. This is out of a total of 7 players from all of Donegal’s hurling clubs. This is testament to the dedication that these lads have shown to hurling over the years and they will take part in a residential in UU Jordanstown at the start of July and take part in a challenge match against a Connacht select later in the year.

Dillon Duffy, Paul Tourish, Ben (Roe) Doherty, Fiachra MacLochlainn (Poet) and Oisin Grant were successful. Congratulations to all. Sadly, one player to miss out was PJ McCarron, who had been carrying a leg injury throughout the selection process and without a shadow of a doubt would have made the squad also. Incidentally we have a further 3 players that are part of the Donegal squad Darren Connolly, Jason Campbell, and Jack Callaghan.

As a footnote to this our Club U16 hurlers fielded in the Derry league on Sunday and out of the match-day squad of 19 players only 3 players hadn’t represented their County at the previous days Ulster blitz’s at U14, U15 and U16 level.

U14 Girls Football

Congratulations to Sophie (Roe) Doherty and Shannen Hegarty who were part of today’s Under 14 County panel to play Down in the Ulster Final. Well done girls and we hope you enjoy the experience…doing the Club proud!

Buncrana GAA Notes for Week Ending Sunday 3rd April 2015

Senior Hurlers

The Senior Hurlers started their season with a hard-earned win over Kevin Lynch’s Dungiven on Friday night at home in the first round Derry Reserve League.

This is a very young but committed side which deserves great credit for their battling performance, winning on a scoreline of 1:11 to 5:5, with Cathal (Chuckie) Doherty top scorer with 4 goals, the best coming from a ground pull 25 yards out and a narrow angle which rifled to the top corner.

All the Squad played well with County Senior player Donal Og MacLochlainn marshalling the defence, surrounded by talented young players like Patrick Wilson, a 17-year-old who looked comfortable at senior level, keeper Darren Fitzpatrick and backs James Doherty and Aedan Stokes, who seemed to settle as the game got going and relished the tough physical battle that is senior hurling. So-called veterans of the side Daniel Wilson, Conor Grant and Sam Doherty were resolute in the back-line and were a launch pad for many attacks.

Around the middle, Paul Nelson and Darren (Roe) Doherty, both part of our Minor team, can be very proud of their individual performances and their fitness stood to them as the game came to a close. Adam Duffy, who is almost the oldest player in the team, can be delighted with his contribution despite the fact that he has had limited game time over the last few years.

Young Tom Clare, David Guilfoyle, and Ronan Walsh tried hard throughout but the aforementioned Cathal Doherty had a night to remember. Second-half subs Declan McCarron, Kevin Vaughan, MacCauley Carr and Lee Duffy laid down serious claims for starting spots next week.

U16 Hurling

Our U16 Hurlers had a convincing win over Banagher on Sunday morning in the first round of the Derry League with all the squad playing well.

U14 Boys Football

The Boys had another good workout this week in preparation for their upcoming league campaign. They played three 20 minute games against local Derry neighbours Steelstown. This was ideal as all the squad got to show their improvements and push for places in the starting team – final score was 3-9 to 0-7.

First Holy Communion

Congratulations to all the Boys & Girls who made their First Holy Communion on Saturday, especially all our club members. We hope you had a special day.
