All Ireland Scór title for Gaoth Dobhair

By PRO Donegal Thu 11th May

The scór season came to an end in the Waterfront theatre in Belfast on Saturday and it was great to see Donegal competing in three of the eight competitions.

The Tráth na gCeist team from Aodh Ruadh B.A.S. gave a good account of themselves but were not in the final running for medals in what was a particularly difficult quiz where the winning team only answered 76% of the questions.

Catriona Solan as an Chlochán Liath gave her best performance to date but unfortunately the winners medal went to Tipperary. Solo singing is very often down to the personal choice and taste of the adjudicator but from a singing point of view, Catriona could not have done any more and many that I have spoken to since felt she was the best singer. The important thing is that we were well represented and Catriona can be very proud of the fact that she represented Dungloe, Donegal and Ulster in the 2017 All Ireland final of Scór Sinsir.

Comhghairdeas le Gaoth Dobhiar who won the Leiriú and are worthy All Ireland champions with a piece in our native language and this is important for scór in the county, in Ulster and throughout the country and it has done a great deal to promote the Irish language. Their act which was a great combination of history, poetry, singing, dancing (sean nós ar ndóigh) and comedy all cleverly rolled into one. The quality of the acting was of the highest standard and in what was a stiff competition, they were very deserving winners. Maith sibh Gaoth Dobhair. Bhí an bua go hiomlán tuillte agaibh.

We had a great year in Scór winning 2 All Irelands (One in Scór na nÓg and one in Scór Sinsir)

Three Ulster titles (Two in Scór sinsir and one in Scór na nÓg)

It is worth noting also that 28 clubs took part in Scór na nÓg and 20 clubs in Scór Sinsir which is tremendous and it is a promising reflection of those who did not win county titles that it was just as difficult to win in Donegal as it was in Ulster in some of the competitions.

Most of all, Míle buíochas to the cultural officers and mentors who prepared so many good acts in all categories (except sett dancing) in the county.

Míle buíochas to everyone from Donegal who made the journey to Belfast to support our acts
