By PRO Donegal Tue 17th Jun

Buncrana GAA Notes for Week Ending Sunday 15th June 2014

Senior Football
It was a disappointing end to the Seniors long trip to Naomh Brid on Friday night. The home side were strong in the first half, going in 6 points up at half-time. Buncrana came out for the second half determined to make a game of it and in a period of domination they managed to reduce the home sides lead to 2 points. Unfortunately for Buncrana, Naomh Brid were then awarded a penalty which the keeper initially saved only for the home side to get the deflected ball into the net for the goal that finally killed off Buncrana’s gallant fight-back. Final score was Naomh Bríd 1-10 Buncrana 0-9.

BUNCRANA EDGE OUT EUNANS IN HUMDINGER U14 CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

Buncrana 5-04 St. Eunan’s 4-02

The spectators in Convoy’s Centre of Excellence for the county ‘A’ hurling final were treated to fine weather, fine drama and to great commitment from all thirty plus players.
Buncrana won it in the final minute with a goal from Cathal Óg Wilson. It could so easily have gone the other way.

Not thirty seconds earlier a strike from Eunan’s excellent Shane O’Donnell had goal written all over it but for high heroics from the Buncrana keeper, Óisín Kelly. The final minute reflected drama from the throw in by Senior Referee Hugo Wallace from Burt.
Buncrana got the scoreboard ticking with a point from Aaron Craig. Shane O’Donnell got his first of three goals and followed with a couple of points.

Aaron Craig on twenty minutes hit the Eunans net. Niall O’Doherty followed with a point for the Scarvey boys. When Letterkenny’s Ethan Doherty rattled the Buncrana goal Eunans had taken control. The Buncrana mums and dads looked worried. Their sons had swept all before them up till this point. They were League and County Féile champs and favourites to complete the treble.

The O’Donnell Park manager, Gordon Randles’ boys were fighting tooth and claw and led by a goal with halftime beckoning. Matty Mulholland a touch of class from Inis Eoghain then nets and equalizes . The end of the first half – All square.

Early after the restart Eunans miss from the penalty spot. Buncrana get another three pointer through Cathal Óg. Eunans step up to the mark: Shane O’Donnell’s two strikes score to the value of six points. The Letterkenny lads lead by a goal. Buncrana mammies are more worried. Niall O’Doherty points a free. The difference is two points. Jason McLaughlin’s fine goal leaves Buncrana a point to the good. Eunans attack : wide, wide, save. And again attack, attack, spectacular save. Ryan Hegarty points for Buncrana .

The last sixty seconds will live long in the spectators’ memories. Both squads shone. Managers Cathal Wilson and Gordon Randles and their coaching teams have very fine players for the future. Both teams were praised by the Donegal County Minor Board for a terrific game of sporting hurling.

U14 Football
The boys did brilliantly and have now qualified for the Div 1 Championship final. This is a great achievement for a really talented and dedicated bunch of lads. They overcame their close neighbours Muff in an exciting and tense affair which lived up to all the pre-match expectations. A highly billed game lived up to the name with high scoring and great commitment shown by both teams. Although Buncrana started well they found themselves 3 points down at half time. After a half time chat the boys came out in the second half and scored 3 unanswered goals. This laid a platform for the rest of the half with Muff now chasing the game. Although Buncrana went on to win by a good margin it didn’t feel like that on the line as both teams gave their all right up to the final whistle. Both teams deserve great praise for their commitment and fair play. Next up is McCools in the final with the date to be confirmed. Hopefully Buncrana can get some of their wounded players back fit and ready for the final, we’re sure none of the players will want to lose out on that after all their hard work to get the team there.

Under 14 Girls Football
The girls lost narrowly to Ballyshannon last week by 2 points. The management knew that the trip would take its toll on performance, especially in a school week, and tried to rearrange the date to a Friday or weekend to facilitate our young primary school players but unfortunately this was not possible.

As expected, our performance in the first half was not up to our usual high standards and we were second to the ball and failed to tackle and break down the Bundoran attacks. However, thanks to the goalkeeping of Leah Gallinagh and with Shannon Hegarty taking some fine scores, we finished the first half trailing by only one point.

At the break some tactical switches and substitutions were made and the Buncrana girls finally blew away the cobwebs and started to dominate for most of this half. It was clear from the team’s performance that despite their youthfulness they were the better team and they took the game to Bundoran. The girls competed for every ball and played and moved the ball much better as a team. Bundoran’s defence, especially the half back line, was the defining factor in this game as they absorbed the pressure and minimised our scoring chances. The final score was Bundoran 5-4 Buncrana 5–2 in what was a very exciting game right up to the final whistle. The girls can be proud of their performance and will have learned a lot from this game, especially the younger girls.

Well done to:
Leah Gallinaigh, Rachel Gillespie, Niamh Grant, Lucy Herron, Ciara Doherty, Orlaith Mc Cracken, Chloe Frazer, Sophie Doherty (captain) Caoimhe Doherty, Courtney Clare, Nicole Donaghey, Mia McCusker, Catherine Mc Gonigle, Shannon Hegarty, Derbhla Gleeson, Aoife McGill, Rachel McLaughlin, Beth Doherty, Caitlin Gillespie , Briana Doherty

Donegal Mór Hurling.
A new Twitter page, Donegal Mór Hurling, has been launched to compliment Donegal Óg Hurling which is enjoying an increasing number of contributions and visits.
The aim is to spread news of senior hurling events, results and fixtures within the broader GAA and hurling community. Information, hopefully, will come from club or board secretaries. Suggestions are welcome.

Cardiac Screening
Following the completion of a two year research programme in which nearly 300 GAA players were examined in an attempt to assess the effectiveness of various screening methods, the GAA’s Medical, Scientific & Welfare Committee updated its position paper on cardiac screening.

The GAA now advise that the most effective way to identify risk is for players over the age of 14 to undergo cardiac screening on one occasion. It is also advised that this process be repeated before the age of 25. Players should consult their team or family doctor if they wish to get screened and screening should consist of completion of the GAA’s Cardiac Screening Questionnaire, a Physical Examination and an ECG.

As part of its commitment in this context and to aid diagnosis, the GAA in conjunction with the Gaelic Players Association (GPA) have implemented a programme whereby any doctors carrying out a cardiac screening programme for a GAA player will be able to send that ECG to the cardiac department in the Mater under Dr. Joseph Galvin to have a sports cardiology opinion on the ECG.

In order to avail of this service, GP’s should contact Ruairí Harvey, the GAA’s Player Welfare Administrator in Croke Park (ruairi.harvey@gaa.ie or 01 865 8685).

We would recommend that any interested players, parents or guardians download the Cardiac Screening Questionnaire, or alternatively there will be some copies available in the clubhouse. http://www.gaa.ie/medical-and-player-welfare/cardiac-screening/
